Startups that care about environmental sustainability are now crucial, as the world is increasingly recognising the importance of using products and services that create less waste and more value for customers.
The United Nations (UN) World Commission on Environment and Development, has stated that environmental sustainability is about acting in a way that ensures future generations have the natural resources available to live an equal, if not better, way of life as current generations.
The UN has recently expanded its definition of environmental sustainability to include wellbeing, clean air and water, as well as the protection of natural beauty. But there’s no doubt we have a long way to go and that’s where the light needs to shine upon the startups who are determined to make a difference.
What does environmental sustainability really mean? Environmental sustainability is all about responsibly interacting with our planet to maintain natural resources and not jeopardise the ability for the next generations to meet their needs.
Institutions and businesses, as well as individuals, all have a unique role in environmental sustainability. As the world population increases, humans have relied on the Earth’s natural resources, (such as minerals, petroleum, coal, gas, and more) and the planet’s biodiversity and creatures have declined in number.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) environmental sustainability is the capacity to improve the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity of the earth’s supporting ecosystems.
Fishburners acknowledges the passion and hard work many startups are putting into creating solutions for environmental sustainability. We are now putting a focus on these ambitious founders with our Tech for Good awards.
The Environmental Sustainability Award, proudly sponsored by BDO, recognises a startup which uses tech-enabled solutions to address the issues surrounding environmental sustainability. This award recipient will receive $5,000 to use toward their startup.
