Majella Campbell takes over the reins as CEO, succeeding Martin Karafilis
Sydney, February 2025 – Fishburners, Australia’s largest startup community, today announces a key leadership transition, with the COO Majella Campbell stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Martin Karafilis, who steps down at the end of this month.
As Fishburners’ Chief Operating Officer and central figure in its strategy, Campbell was instrumental in fostering innovation and scaling impact-driven programs, and is set to lead the organisation into its next phase of growth. Her leadership, experience and deep understanding of the startup ecosystem position her well to take Fishburners forward.
“Fishburners is entering an exciting new era. We’ve laid the foundation for future growth, and I’m excited to lead the organisation into its next chapter. Our mission remains steadfast — empowering founders with the resources, networks, and support they need to build world-changing companies.” – Majella Campbell, Incoming CEO of Fishburners
Meanwhile, Martin Karafilis is stepping down with strong confidence in the organisation’s future and Campbell’s ability to drive its mission forward. Under Karafilis’ leadership, Fishburners has navigated significant transformation, including stabilisation following the COVID-19 pandemic, and launch of key initiatives that set the stage for the organisation’s next phase. He remains a passionate advocate for the entrepreneurial community and continues to be involved in various initiatives across the ecosystem.
“Fishburners has always been about pushing boundaries and supporting founders to succeed. With the startup ecosystem evolving rapidly, now is the right time for a leadership transition. Majella has been instrumental in shaping Fishburners’ future, and I have no doubt she will continue to drive our mission forward.” – Martin Karafilis, Outgoing CEO of Fishburners
The transition comes at a time of broader shifts within the Australian startup ecosystem, including changes in government initiatives such as the transition of the Sydney Startup Hub into Tech Central. Fishburners is well prepared to navigate this evolving landscape, positioning itself for sustained impact and long-term growth.
Bilyana Smith, Chair of Fishburners’ board, emphasised the significance of this leadership change.
“Martin’s leadership has been crucial in taking Fishburners’ role in the startup ecosystem to another level. As we step into this new phase, Majella’s experience, passion and strategic vision make her the ideal leader to steer Fishburners forward, foster new opportunities and reinforce our impact in the startup ecosystem.” – Bilyana Smith, Chair of Fishburners’ board
With Campbell at the helm, Fishburners is set to build on its strong foundation, continuing to empower early-stage founders and drive meaningful impact in Australia’s startup ecosystem.
