Q&A with Matthew Gregory and Scott Gentle, Co-founders of Zable Health

At Fishburners, we take immense pride in nurturing startups and witnessing their growth. Today, we celebrate the official launch of Zable Health, a company that began its journey with us. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Matthew Gregory and Scott Gentle, the co-founders of Zable Health, to discuss their remarkable journey and how being part of the Fishburners community played a role in their success.

Congratulations on the official launch of Zable Health! Can you tell us a bit about the journey and what inspired you to start this company?

Matthew: Thank you! Our journey began in 2020, driven by personal health challenges that highlighted the daunting barriers faced by millions navigating specialist referrals each year. Too often, patients are left in the dark about costs and wait times, leading to stress, uncertainty, and delayed care. Partnering with Scott, one of my best mates, we set out to tackle these challenges head-on. Through extensive research and collaboration, we uncovered deep-rooted issues of information asymmetry and fragmented healthcare access in Australia.

Scott: Our combined experiences in technology and healthcare provided us with unique insights into the inefficiencies of the healthcare system. We saw firsthand the frustrations of patients and providers, and we knew there had to be a better way. Our goal was to create a platform that empowered patients with the information they needed to make informed decisions about their health.

How did being part of the Fishburners community contribute to the growth and development of Zable Health?

Matthew: Being part of the Fishburners community was instrumental in our growth. The supportive environment, access to resources, and networking opportunities provided us with the foundation we needed to refine our ideas and build our platform. The sense of camaraderie and the shared experiences with other startups helped us navigate the challenges of a startup journey. Additionally, the mentorship and guidance from the Fishburners team were invaluable in helping us scale our operations and reach our goals.

Scott: Fishburners offered us more than just a physical space to work. It was a community of like-minded entrepreneurs facing similar challenges. The regular events, workshops, and networking opportunities allowed us to connect with mentors, investors, and other startups, which was crucial for our development. The collaborative atmosphere fostered innovation and growth, enabling us to push the boundaries of what we could achieve.

What were some of the key milestones or achievements during your time at Fishburners?

Matthew: During our time at Fishburners, we achieved several key milestones. We bootstrapped the business for the first two years using personal savings, received two government grants, and built solid relationships with stakeholders within the health sector. We also established a robust SEO foundation, generating significant organic traffic and highlighting the value of our service. These achievements were pivotal in setting the stage for our official launch.

Scott: Another significant milestone was the development and launch of our platform. We spent countless hours refining our technology and ensuring it met the needs of our users. The feedback from the Fishburners community was invaluable in this process, helping us to continuously improve and iterate on our product. We also formed partnerships with key healthcare providers, which was crucial for our growth and success.

Reflecting on your time at Fishburners, how did the sense of community and the relationships you built here contribute to the growth and success of Zable?

Matthew: The sense of community at Fishburners was a cornerstone of our success. The relationships we built with other founders, mentors, and the Fishburners team provided us with support, inspiration, and valuable insights. The collaborative environment encouraged us to share ideas and learn from others’ experiences, which was incredibly beneficial in refining our business model and strategy.

Scott: The relationships we developed at Fishburners also opened doors to new opportunities and partnerships. Being part of a vibrant startup ecosystem gave us access to a wealth of knowledge and expertise, which was crucial in overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities. The sense of belonging and mutual support within the community motivated us to keep pushing forward, even during tough times.

Can you share some insights into the impact Zable Health has had on the Australian healthcare system so far?

Matthew: Since our inception, Zable Health has already helped over 500,000 Australians connect with healthcare providers. We provide crucial information on estimated wait times and consultation fees, including Medicare rebates for almost all specialists in Australia. By offering these key details, we empower patients to make well-informed decisions about their health with confidence. Our platform addresses the current bottlenecks in the healthcare system and serves as a valuable educational tool for Australians, informing them about their rights and opening up new avenues of care that fit both budget and schedule.

Scott: The impact we’ve seen has been profound. Patients who were previously frustrated and confused by the referral process now have a clear pathway to the care they need. Our platform has also been a game-changer for healthcare providers, helping them reach patients more effectively and efficiently. We’ve received positive feedback from both patients and providers, which reinforces the value of what we’re doing and motivates us to keep pushing forward.

What are your future plans for Zable Health, and how do you envision its growth beyond Fishburners?

Matthew: Our future plans for Zable Health involve expanding our platform to cover more specialties and regions, enhancing our technology to provide even more precise and helpful information to patients, and continuing to foster partnerships with healthcare providers and industry stakeholders. We aim to become the go-to resource for Australians seeking specialist care, making healthcare navigation simple, accessible, and empowering for all.

Scott: We also plan to leverage the data and insights we’ve gained to further innovate and improve our services. Our goal is to create a seamless, integrated healthcare experience for all Australians. Beyond that, we are exploring opportunities to expand our offering, bringing our solutions to healthcare systems facing similar challenges. The journey ahead is exciting, and we are committed to positively impacting healthcare for every Australian in every situation.

If we turned the clock back to 2020, what advice would you give to your former selves?

Matthew: I would tell my former self to stay resilient and adaptable. The startup journey is filled with ups and downs, and it’s important to stay focused on your vision while being flexible enough to pivot when necessary. Building a strong support network and seeking mentorship can make a significant difference in navigating challenges and seizing opportunities.

Scott: My advice would be to embrace the learning process and not be afraid of failure. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Surround yourself with a supportive community, like we did at Fishburners, and don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice. Collaboration and continuous learning are key to overcoming obstacles and achieving success.

How did Fishburners help in building your team, and can you share any specific stories?

Matthew: Fishburners played a crucial role in building our team. For instance, our head of product, Genevieve Katelis, was another member at Fishburners who initially contracted her services as a freelance product consultant. The stars aligned when Gen was placed at a desk opposite Scott and me by Tegan Harlow, who thought we would be a good match. Tegan was right, and over the next few months, Gen began working with us, starting with a few hours a week and quickly becoming Zable’s first full-time employee. Her passion for our mission was truly aligned with ours.

Another fantastic story is from our first live pitch at a Fishburners pitch night. It was the first time we publicly shared our story, and I didn’t expect much beyond practice and getting over any fears of public speaking. But the outcome was incredible. After the pitch, a guy named Anthony Marcar approached us, praised the pitch, and expressed how much he believed in our mission. Over a few coffees and deep conversations, Anthony became our CTO! Beyond Gen and Anthony, we’ve engaged with many other Fishburners members who have consulted their skills to help shape what Zable is today.

Conclusion

We are incredibly proud of Zable Health’s journey and their significant contributions to improving healthcare access in Australia. Their success story is a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and perseverance. We wish Matthew, Scott, and the entire Zable Health team continued success as they embark on this exciting new chapter. Together, we are making a difference—one empowered step at a time.
