Motivating Factors

Here at Fishburners we are treated to some incredibly interesting, informative and inspiring talks by visiting business people. Last Friday’s visit by Dean McEvoy of ‘Spreets’ fame was no exception. His insight into the long, hard struggle a budding entrepreneur faces while following a business idea that doesn’t seem to want to get off the ground and then tales of the one that flies almost by itself were poignant to all present.

He started off by asking those in the room to shout out the reasons why we have chosen the well-trodden path of start-up entrepreneurship. The answers were varied but not unusual: money, desire to make a difference, freedom, passion, amongst others. It got me thinking about my motivating factors, the common thread that runs through my 15 years in the music industry and the choices that lead me to the Mecca for start-ups, Fishburners, less than six months ago.

When it comes down to it, the most important, revealing and ultimately most fulfilling motivation that distinguishes the person behind a start up idea to an every day employee is ‘Self Expression’. The desire to say something unique, communicate an idea, a point of view or interpretation of a solution to a problem.

All successful business, just like all successful bands, are a triumph of one person or a group of people expressing themselves in a way that no one else could and then a large enough group of people connecting with it to fund its continual expression, often evolving as it does so. Companies spend thousands of dollars each year on advertisers to help define what they are expressing but it is those products, brands and solutions that know exactly who they are and express themselves openly, honestly and directly that do not need fancy ad campaigns or slogans.

Running a start up is like being in a band in that it is the purest way to express yourself. It is just you, your idea and your tools looking for your audience, both with a desire to connect.

It is those start ups that are able to express and connect more effectively and efficiently than the next guys who go on to be a ‘hit’. A good app really is the new 3 min pop song.
